Four dairymen were fined a total of £230 in the Police Court to-day for selling milk containing added water. George 1). Bates, on two charges relating to 3!) per cent, and 35 per cent, added water, was lined £3O on each charge. Bates alleged that someone must have tampered with the miikcans and put water in. lie -aid he could not pay the tine, as it would send him bankrupt. The Magistrate, Mr Povnton, said if defendant thought the line too heavy lie could apply to the Minister. The public must be protected. It was little children who suffered, and it was on this sustenance that life and death often depended.
Henry John Milieu admitted four charges relating to ten, nine, eight and seven per cent, added water. His only explanation was that the cooler had been leaking.
Mr Boynton: “It has been a very prolitable cooler. I have heard that story too often.”
The Magistrate imposed a line of £lO on each oi‘ the fyur charges. George .Mitchell, for having IS per cent, added wafer in his milk, was lined £2O, and Charles Wilson, for a nine per cent, offence, £lO.
