FOXTON CROQUET CLUB
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Foxton Croquet Club was held in the Bowling Club pavilion yesterday afternoon, the Rev. W. H. Walton (president of the Bowling Club) presiding. Rev. Walton, speaking to the report, said the ladies were to be commended for their very successful effort to improve their green. Unfortunately a great many weeds had shown up with the new grass, and lie suggested that the Bowling Club be approached to form a working bee -to remove them. The balance-sheet showed the trophy account in credit £2 17s Id, outstanding liabilities £2 11s. The green account showed a small debit.
The retiring president, Mrs M. E. Perreau, in declining nomination for the coming year, thanked the committee and members for their loyalty and support. It was unanimously agreed that the Club’s appreciation of Mrs Peri can’s generosity and services to the Club be (placed on record. Mrs C. A. Pearson was elected president, and Mrs R. Parkes vicepresident; secretary, Mrs Owen; committee: Mesdames Barr, Downes, Head and Miss Speirs; handicapping committee, Mesdames Perreau, Pearson and Parkes. The following clause was added to the rule controlling annual subscriptions: “That an entrance fee of 10s 0d be charged new mem r bers.”’
It was agreed that the usual han-
dicap singles matches be held this
season, also that the ladder be plae-'-ed in order of handicapping, and that the first six weeks of the season be devoted to ladder matches, the secretary to have charge of the competition.
. The following motion was carried after much discussion: “That any member wishing to secure a place in a team chosen, has the privilege of challenging any member of the team, games to he two out of three.” The drawing for the holders of the Stewart Shields, for the commencement of the season, was Mesdames McMurray and Huntley. Nye Mallets: Mesdames Bryant and Downes. The Rev. Walton was heartily thanked for the donation of a handicap singles trophy. Mrs Downes, the retiring secretary, was also accorded a vote of thanks.
The annual report stated that the season 1924-25, on the whole, had been very satisfactory, all the members being very keen and anxious for play. Last season it was tho-
ught advisable for the singles hancap matches to place all players in one grade. Mrs McMurray won the first prize (Mr Barr’s trophy), and Mrs Head, second (Club’s trophy), with Mrs Pearson and Mrs Barr a tie for Mrs S. Austin’s points prize. In the play-off, Mrs Barr won. The thirty-minute tournament trophies were’ won by Mrs Huntley first (Club’s trophy), with Mrs McMurray second (Mrs Owen’s trophy). On the night of the opening day for the green, October 15th, a dance was held in the Masonic Hall, which brought in a nett balance of £3 19s; also on Labour Day competitions were held, which resulted in 17s being placed to the credit of the trophy fund.
At a general meeting held in February, it was decided that as the green was getting into such a bad state, a fund for the improvement and relaying of the lawns should be started. As a result of the various efforts, £39 3s 5d was collected. The work of relaying and improvements was carried out by Mr Newth, the total cost being £42 12s. Although the Club was a little in debt, it would be a small matter to wipe it off. The ladder games were not very successful, only seven games being played throughout the season. On March sth, the Levin Club challenged for the Hornblow badges, and after a strenuous game, the visitors Avon. The Club had played -a number of inter-club matches, • both at Palmerston North and Dewitt, and was fairly successful. During the season the Club had lost one member by removal from the district. The secretary (Mrs Downes) thanked the president (Mi's Perreau) and members for the help given in the carrying out of her duties, and trusted that the coming season, with the new green and improvements, would be one of the best.
