NEWS AND NOTES.
The thin oil extracted by a simple Australian process from spoiled potatoes is claimed to be of special value in lubricating delicate mechanism, such as certain scientific instruments. Having a low freezing point it may be used for the engines and instruments of airplanes. Dr. Harknoss, a specialist, told the Homeopathy Convention at New York, that one of the most rare creatures was a colour blind woman. Explaining this as the reason for women never missing colourful apparel displayed in the shop windows, Dr. Harknoss offers a reward to anybody discovering a colour blind woman. A new kind of lire extinguisher has been invented for use in petrol store-houses, oil tankers, and other structures containing intlammable substances. When directed on J blaze these devices actually freeze the flames to death. A very cold and dense carbon dioxide gas is released so that all oxygen is blocked and the lire, with no oxygen to feed on, immediately dies out no matter how combustible the material burning may he. Tests have proved this extinguisher to be a very efficient, and even burning oil can be put out by its use.
