(From Our Own Correspondent). Z\[i- Ben Roberts, Labour candidate lor Mnmnvatu electorate at llie forthcoming' elections, addressed a fairly large meeting at the Beach Hall on Monday night, on “Labour, Religion and the War.’’
Mr Roberts based his remarks on hese words from Ruskin: “There s no wealth but life."
After touching on the ideals of tin! Christian student movement, Mr Roberts dealt with the war. The Labour movement, he said is out to develop and evolve that which is highest in civilisation. Another war would extinguish civilisation. The speaker also dealt with the land laws in the Book of Leviticus, and compared them with presentday conditions. He ventured to say that in many respects they were belter than present-day land laws. “Mortgage slavery,” Mr Roberts said, “is no good to a democratic country like New Zealand. An end •should be put to exploitation. Service should lie the law of life, not competition and disorganisation.” Mr Roberts received a very patient hearing, and was accorded a vole of thanks for his very able a ddress.
