TWO YOUNG MEN SENTENCED
“It appears that nothing- hut imprisonment will put down the ’o'fi'enee of using other people’s property,’’ said Chief Detective Kemp at the Wellington Magistrate’s Court yesterday, when Alfred Victor Smith, a labourer (30), and .lames Peter Walker, a. storeman (29), were charged with unlawfully converting to their own use a mo-tor-car, valued at £BOO, the property of Frank Goldberg. On Friday last, at S p.m., continued the Chief Detective, Mr Goldberg left his car outside the Civic League rooms, in street, and found it missing when he returned about .10 p.m. The two accused were seen about 11 p.m. driving the car in the direction of the Unit Valley, and on Saturday morning the vehicle Was found at Upper Ilufl in a damaged condition. The number plates appeared io have boon wrenched oil’, and the radiator and rear tail-lighl were smashed. The tolal damage was estimated at £IOO. “Walker was before the Court in November Inst, and was fined 10s for carrying on a bookmaker’s business. The other man is married, with two children, and 1 understand lie lias a nmintenanee order against him,” concluded the Chief Detective. Each of the accused was sentenced to two months' imprisonment.
