THE FUSION QUESTION.
MORE MEETINGS. Wellington, June 30 The tenacity with which the fusion negotiations are hanging on suggests to some that either one .side or the other is desperately anxious to bring about amalgamation at any price. There was another hour's consultation yesterday, between the committees which have been representing the two sides for some time past. It is gathered that the Liberals have given way almost on everything and that there is little left to argue over. It has been stated that here is a growing feeling that Reform is standing out against taking the Liberals into the fold, but this seems unlikely. No party is likely to wish to drive away new converts to its ranks, especially if the new converts desire to come in without making terms for their own benefit, unless there are a few irieeonsilables in the Reform party who can stand in the way. It now seems as though the Liberals are willing to amalgamate unconditional! v.
There were further negotiations to-day, hut “nothing io report” was all that was announced.
The Reform party met in caucus after the House rose and after a .-.itting of two and a-half hours, Mr. Coates announced there was nothing to report. The question ol fusion was srill in the hands ot the delegates.
