OBITUARY.

MRS. J. D. SMITH. Death has removed a member of a well-known Palmerston North family in the person of Susannah Elizabeth Smith, wife of Mr John D. Smith, of 25 Bourke street, and daughter of the late Mr G. W. Shailer, a former resident of this town, (says the Standard). The deceased lady was a native of Bideford, Middlesex, England, but came out to New Zealand in the company of her parents in the vessel Ocean Mail when but seven years of age. Mr Shailer, who was a photographer, proceeded to palmerston North on arrival in New Zealand, but later removed to Feilding. He, however, again took up residence in the chief town of the Manawatu, and some nine years later the deceased married, a period of coiitimios 41 years being brought to a close unexpectedly on Tuesday, at the age of 58 years. Although she had not enjoyed the best of health recently, the deceased was able to move about freely and the day prior to her demise had, in the company of one of her daughters, gone shopping. She was about the house on Tuesday morning but on the return of a daughter from fulfilling some house duties at the back of the house she found that her mother had collapsed and expired. There are left to mourn he rloss a family of five daughters, three sons having predeceased her. The surviving members are: —Mesdames R. Peg'ley and W. Paris Misses 1., V. and L. Smith, while there are six grand children. Mesdames G. Woodroofe (Foxton), D. Collis (Kairanga), A. J. Bulliman (Waikanae), R. Parkinson (Palmerston North), E. Davenport (Hokowhitu) and Messrs G. (Hawera), A. J. (Hokowhitu), H. (Te Horo) and C. W. and A. F. Shailer (Oroua Downs) are brothers and sisters of the deceased. The funeral took place this afternoon.
