BOROUGH COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last night. ROAD FOREMAN’S REPORT. During the past month the road staff has been engaged in the following work. Carting and spreadmo metal on Sandon Road, Purcell and Unions Streets and Avenue Road, cleaning dim ins, Norbiton Road, Russell and .Jenks Street, repairing footpath, Russell Street, and general mainleriniiec. The metal from Belmont is coming to hand freely. We are now engaged m pleading same on Moutoa Road and Pari: Street and tin -.outhern end of Johnston Street. A*

There is a good (leal of 'drain denning to he done but as the metal is arriving daily the road staff U fully occupied with same. Owing to this the weekly street cleaning has been hindered but has been attended to when ever possible. — Adopted. GAS MANAGER’S REPORT. The apparatus is working quite satisfactorily and the plant is in a fair state of repair. During the month the main drain in Union Street has been altered as it is was in the way of the sewerage work. Several services that were choked have been cleared and great deal of other work done for consumers. There is a good demand for coke and we still have a good supply of coal on bund. — Adopted. A motion of sympathy was passed to the relatives of the late Mr. A. King. DEPUTATIONS. Messrs Dawson and Howe, residents of Reeve Street, waited on the Council with a request that a road he formed in Reeve Street. —Decided that when the County gradet is available Reeve Street be graded up and the ruts filled in. Also that property holders in Reeve Street he instructed to grub noxious weeds fronting their properties. Works Committee to inspect Street before the work is commenced. Messrs Heath and Brooks waited on tin 1 Council with a view to getting tin* Council to lay a gas main down Purcell Street. The gas manager reported that i tie cost of laying - a main down Purcell Street would he in the vicinity of .Cot).
Decided that a gas main be laid in Purcell Street for about 22 chains, on the lines of the Manager's report, but that new portion he of 1 j ineh pipe, provided the applicants sign up to take cookers etc. Decided to extend the gas main in Whyte Street to Mr Thomas’ section when the house is commenced. which Air Thomas proposes to erect. On the recommendation of the gas manager Air McLean was appointed gas works stoker. Mr. Parker was appointed borough scavenger on the terms of appointment laid down by the Town Clerk. Decided that the action of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce he supported in the bringing of Railway coal through the local port, mill for the adjourning county councils to commence their main highways work from the borough, :ilso that it he a suggestion to the Harbour Board to arrange a deputation to wait on the Minister of Railways, asking that the Department call tenders for the delivery of coal through the port. The subdivisions C. M. Ross Co. Ltd., to J. P. Smith and J. P. Smith to the C. M. Ross Co., Ltd., were approved. Decided to paint the roof of the Council Chambers with suitable coats of paint and that tenders be called for the work, also that the windows of th Council Chambers be frosted. A donation of £2 2s ffd was granted the local Plunket Society. Mr Harris’ tender for painting the pound fee board for the sum of £o was accepted, subject to the old paint being burnt off and the hoard primed after burning. The painting of street name plates at 2s, 2s (id each, for old and new respectively was also accepted. The Mayor, Air Chrvstall and Or. Winslanley were appointed to represent the Borough of Foxton at the protest meeting re the non-stop of expresses at Levin, to be held in Levin this week. Decided to obtain quotations for painting of the mortuary chapel, fence, and gateway and notice board. Decided to remove the guns lying in t lie Council yard to a suitable place in the Reserves. Decided that the Public works Committee go into the question of the matter of streets and footpaths, and to report at the next meeing of he Council.
TOWN HALL COMMITTEE'S REPORT. . The following are recommendations brought forward by the Hall Committee: — That the Town Clerk be instrueted to submit information re electric power at the Town Hall, and that the Town Hall Committee recommends the council to connect the Hall to the Power Board mains, and to instal mirror, arc lamps and rectifier. That the matter of drop curtains be left in the hands of the
Town Clerk to see Mr Harris and submit further proposals. Ft —was decided that a Tungar Rectifier, Resistance, and Halm Goetz Mirror are, at a cost of £ll2 Is ffd he purchased and installed at the Town Hall.
PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE REPORT. The following are recommendations brought forward by the Works Committee: — Decided that a little asphalt be placed at the entrance to lhakara Gardens; that the row of trees (about (55) tilong the north side of Victoria Park he disposed of by tender and the existing fence be shifted to ff feet north of the Power Board poles. The trees to be cut down to within 18 inches of the ground level: that the question of the Norbiton Road drain be deferred; that a 15 inch pipe e.ulvet he laid at the corner of Baker and Hawaii streets, 43 ft. wide; that about 21 chains of the roadway along the north side of the Avenue fronting the Cemetery from the foot of the sandhill be ploughed and scooped to make it flat for the eonvenienee of ears turning at the cemetery gate; that the culvert nfc the corner of Putter Street and Union Street, he widened by 20ft. at the western end; that the portion of roadway joining Frances Street to Reeve Street he graded up and put in order; that the duties as drawn up for nightsoil.removal etc. he approved; that, the Town Clerk arrange for the Works Commit lee to meet the property owners at the eastern end of Norbiton Road, to discuss measures to prevent flooding; that the Fire Board he asked if they will pay half c-ost of installation and rental of telephone at the Waterworks Foreman's residence, it the Council will have the work done; that Air Admore's price for painting heavy traffic hoards with direction signs as specified for the sum of £1 10s be accepted.—Adopted.
