THE LATE MR. MASSEY.
Before proceeding to I lie ordinary business at Saturday’s annual meeting of the Foxton Harbour Board. I lie Chairman (Mr J. Linklater, M.l'.) said it was his sad duty to refer to the groat loss the Dominion and the Empire has sustained sini'c the Board last met by the death of Ihe lit. Hon. W. K. Massey. The late Mr Massey had for twelve and a half years and nine months led our Government with distillation and .had hern prominently identilied with the House of Representatives tor ;H years as one of its most trusted and sterling members. Sorrow at his passing has been universal. Never in the history of this country loot there been sin-li universal expressions of regret and sympathetic references to the life work and • -!i: 11 ■:i• 1«*i■ of any public man. The members of the Foxton Harbour Hoard that day would have the privi!t irr of adding their t rilmle to t he thousands which had already been paid to a grout man who practically
oave his life for New Zealand. Willi din' hue Prime Minister the good ol the Dominion and its people was alua vs paramount. He set a straight line throughout his life and career thiit those who are left to carry on would do well to follow. On many occasions during the pas 1 years ihev had occasion to approach him as a. Board with regard to tinaneial assistance for port operations, and their applications were always sympathetically dealt with. At the conclusion of the Chairman’s reference to Mr Massey a motion of sympathy was carried, tin members standing ill silence for r few minutes.
