WANGANUI SETTLER’S TRADGIC DEATH.
WHILE PROPOSING FRIEND’S HEALTH. Wanganui, May 31. Kaitoke was the scene of a tragic happening on Saturday, when Mr James Higgie, who is well and popularly known throughout Wanganui and district, expired at “Wirikoa," (he residence of Mr Ewen Campbel. The occasion was the 83rd birthday of Mr Campbel, with whom Mr Higgie had been on terms of the closest intimacy for many years. The two gentlemen were the staunchest of friends and it was their custom each to celebrate in true pioneer style the birthday of the other. Mr Campbell's home on Saturday evening was the scene of gaiety and laughter when death intruded with tragic suddenness. Air Higgie was a lion! to propose the toast of the evening, “Our Host,” when he fell in a faint, across the table, expiring almost immediately. Naturally lhe tragedy came as a great; shock In ihc aged host, and caused profound regret in Wanganui and district.
The late Mr Higgie, who was 67 rears of age, held a peculiar place in the affection of the people of Okoia district. He had for many years taken more than ordinary interest in their affairs and was particularly well-known as a spoi lsman, being a prominent member of the Wanganui Racing Club. The Higgle Handicap was named in his Honour. A widow, two sons, lan and Charles, and two unmarried daughters, are left to mourn their loss.
