HOROWHENUA RUGBY UNION.

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING.

The fortnightly meeting of the Horowhenua Rugby Union was held at Levin on Tuesday evening, Mr J. W. Rimmer presiding. Also present: Messrs Dalzell, Robertshaw, Robinson, Anderson, Proctor, Hutchings, Austin, Wrigley, and the secretary (Mr. L. Carmichael). Mr R. Sloan, representing the Referees’ Association, was also present. REFEREES MUST BE SUPPORTED.

The referee of the Hui Mai-Para-pnrnumu Junior match on Saturday last, wrote protesting against the eon duet of the captain of the Hui Mai team who had given considerable trouble during the game. A letter was also received from the secretary of the Hui Mai Club on the same subject. Mr Sloan stated that Mr. Karauti had been appointed to control the game, but, had not turned up. The man who had taken the game was not a referee and when Mr. Lynch came on to the field he had asked him to take over, which he eventually did. A player named A. Bevan, of the Hui Mai Club, had been ordered off the field but had refused to go and had afterwards ridiculed every decision of the referee. Bevan was a very unsatisfactory man and he asked that he be seriously dealt with. Mr Wrigley said that the referees must be protected. He would suggest that this player be stood down for the remainder of the season. The secretary stated that Bevan had been ordered off, but had, on the application ot the opposing captain been allowed to continue. He had therefore not been actually ordered off. Further it was necessary that a man should he given a chance of defending himself before any action could be taken. On the motion of Mr Austin it was decided that the referee in question and Bevan appear before the Union, Bevan to be suspended until he appears. The Otaki Club asked for the

te-iiisla foment of' a senior player to junior rank. A similar application was received from the Foxton Club. After considerable discussion it was decided that the re-instate-7iienis could not lie considered. Loiters of thanks were received from the Convent School Foxton, liVikiorangi, Waikanae, Tokomaru, Mniiakau, and Boys’ Training Farm, for the donation of footballs by the Union. —Received. On the motion of Mr Austin it was decided to write to the Bush Union for information on this point. The Hnwkes Bay Union wrote confirming the arrangements made for a rep. match, at Levin, viz., September 16. Received, it being pointed out by the secretary, that the Union had had an assurance from Hnwkes Bay, that Nepia, Irvine, and the two Brownlies would be members of this team.

The Foxton Borough Council wrote agreeing to reduce the fiat rate for ihe use of Easton Park from 30s to £1 per game played. Mr Austin moved and Mr Hutchings seconded that in the event of the Park being required, the rate of £1 he agreed to. The secretary reported that the Levin D.li.S. player, Ryder, against whom the Foxton Club protested on the score of age. was over 10 and had been debarred from further play. Further, the Headmaster had agreed to go very closely into the question of the ages of team, so that- no further trouble should occur.
