THE LATE MR. MASSEY.
On Thursday shops closed :it 1 o'clock :is a tribute to the memory ok the late lit. lion. \V. F. Massey. A memorial service was held in the Town Hall at 2.31) p.m. the local Silver Band parading from the Post Office to the Hall. Owing to the inclement weather there was not a very large attendance. • The ceremony was conducted hy the ministers of local churches and the Salvation Army Captain. An apology for absence was received from Rev. W. IT. Walton. Mr Ah K. Perreau (Mayor) presided. The service commenced with the singing of the National Anthem. The Mayor hrielly spoke on the object of the service and made reference to the passing of the great statesman. The hymns, “O God our Help," •‘Nearer My God to Thee,” “Lead Kindly Light" and '‘Abide with Me” were sung, led by the band. Prayers were given by Rev. Peryman (Methodist church) and passages of Scripture were read by Captain Stone (Salvation Army). An address was given by tlm Rev. F. McDonald (Presbyterian church) on a text from the Book of Samuel 2 3:38: “Know ye not that he is a prince and a great mail fallen this day in Israel”? The speaker made feeling reference to the late Mr Massey and the great, work he had done. The Bendiction was given by Rev. Peryman and the service closed with the rendering of the “Dead March by the Band, eondiieted by Mr Holder and iho sounding of the “Last Post ’ bv Bugler B. Walls. The local Bank and Post Office observed a close holiday all day.
