MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.

AIR. AL E. PER REA l T ELECTED MAYOR,

FOUR SITTING councillors

RE-ELECTED.

The bi-enninl elections hold yesterday created a good deal of interest locally. Mr .T. Clirvslall, who has held the position of Mayor for a number of years past, and who defeated Mr P. L. Honing’s last election, did not seek the honour this term, and consequently the field was left open for “new blood.” Mr M. E. Perrean, on receipt: of a petition, decided to offer his services in civic circles, and Mr R, Bryant, a sitting councillor, also decided to contest the mayoral seat. The voting yesterday resulted in a two-tn-one majority for Mr Perreau. The field for the Council election was good, thirteen aspirants offering themselves for election —three less than last election total. Only four sitting Councillors offered themselves for re-election on this occasion, namely Crs. Adams, Parkin, Thompson and Walker, all of whom received the renewed confidence of the ratepayers. The remaining seats were filled by Messrs F. Woods, S. E. Cowley, R. MeMurray, C. Rand and 'l'. W. Winstanley, Messrs E. Murphy, A. P. Easton, E. G. Martin and C. Simmons failing’ to secure sufficient votes to gain the coveted positions. The poll was topped by Mr F. Woods and two ex-councillors, Messrs McMnrray and Rand were included in the successful candidates.

There was a large attendance of citizens gathered in front of the Town Hall last night to await the posting of (lie results of the poll. The Mayoralty figures were announced at 7.45 p.nv and upon the figures being posted, Air Perreau mounted the steps of the Town Hall entrance and returned thanks to those who had supported him, and called for three cheers for his opponent (Mr R. Bryant), who, ho said, had acted the gentleman throughout the election. (Cheers). Cheers were then given for Mr Perrenu and Air Bryant. Air Bryant, in acknowledging Air Perreau’s remarks, returned thanks to all those who had supported him, and also those who had not, whom, he said, had saved him a lot. of trouble. (Laughter and Cheers). All candidates, with the exception of Alessrs Simmons and Easton, returned thanks outside the Town Hall last evening, one Councillor being so elated that he “held the floor” until “counted out." At the 1923 election Alessrs A. Ross, (1. Coley, M. 11. Walker, R. AleAFurray, R. Bryant, E. Parkin, W. Adams, .G W. Thorpe, A. N. Smith were elected. During the term, however, AD- AlcAlurray had to retire, and his place was filled by a by-election by Cr. Thompson. The Harbour Board election resulted in Air W. Signal, a sitting member, being defeated by Air AIoAlurray. Air J. Chrystall was again returned, the polling between the two being a deail heat. MAYORALTY.
