FOXTON HARBOUR BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING
'l’lie monthly meeting of the Foxton Harbour Board was held in Palmerston North on Friday afternoon. There were present: Messrs .1. Linldater, M.P. j(chairman), J. Chrysfnll, E. R. B. Hoi hen, W. Barber, and T. J. Clapham. Last vear, stated the chairman, 5.000 trees bad been planted at the Heads. Tie thought that the scheme of planting would be gone on with thi- year, and it was decided to double the Board's order this year —5,000 pitius insignus, 500 maritima, and 500 mnrieata.
DEEPENING THE CHANNEL. Tim Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce wrote, urging the Board to erect protective works to ensure a permanent fairway to the port, and to formulate a scheme for deepening the water on the bar. A similar letter from the Foxton Chamber was read.
A member wondered if the chambers were aware of the money to be expended. The Chairman said that a modified .scheme had been submitted to the Mannwatu-Oroua River Board, but whether it would take any action or not he did not know. Before they themselves took on any work of magnitude they must first get the opinion of an eminent engineer; they could not waste the ratepayers’ money. Tt was decided that the Chambers’ letters be received, and that they be informed that the matter was receiving special attention; also that the Board was awaiting the decision of the ManawatuOroua River Board, and at the same time thanking them for the interest taken. GENERAL. A letter was received from Levin and Co., Ltd., asking for an extended lease of the -ite of their present building used by the ManaWiitu river service.—A member remarked that they should not commit themselves for ten years; it was a very valuable piece of ground; a yearly lease would do very well. Another member was in favour of granting a yearly lease at 25s a week, but on the Chairman and other members objecting to this, it was decided to hold the matter over until next meeting, when information as to whether the Company intended building, etc., would be known. W. Woodham wrote, submitting a lender for claying Te Wlmrangi extension road. It was decided to bold the matter over until next meeting. From the Railway Department, submitting the following plant at valuation: Five small store trucks and six large store trucks. It was decided that the secretary negotiate with the Department for any trucks required. Accounts amounting to £l3O 12s 3il were passed for payment.
