PROPOSED ALTERATION TO RAILWAY TIME TABLE.
SUPPORTED BY BOROUGH COUNCIL.
At Monday night’* meeting oil (he Foxton Borough Council the following letter was received from the local slationmaster: — ‘‘lt is proposed to re-schednle the Foxton Branch trains as under, the Foxton Borough Council views on the matter. “The alteration will provide a connection at Palmerston North in the morning from the down Auckland Express which arrives at Palmerston at 10.13 a.m. and a connection in the afternoon with the down New Plymouth mail and up Auckland Express. “The proposed alterations are as follows, the present times being given in parenthesis:— “Leave Foxton S a.m. (7.50 a.m.) Palmerston North arrive 9.25 a.m. (9.25 a.m.). Leave Foxton 1.10 p.m. (2.30p.m.), Palmerston North arrive 2.45 p.m. (4. 13 p.m.). “Leave Palmerston North for Foxton every day at 10.33 a.m. arriving at Foxton at 12.3 p.m. Leave Palmerston North every day except Saturday at 4.15 p.m., arriving Foxton at 5.45 p.m. Saturday' Palmerston North depart 5.35 p.m., Foxton arrive 7.5." It was decided to heartily support the suggested alteration A letter was also read from the Secretary Railway Board as follows : “In connection with the recent representations in the matter of speeding up the mail trains with particular reference to the deletion of the Levin stop of the New Plymouth and Napier mail trains, 1 am directed to inform you that the Board gave very careful consideration to the question of deleting intermediate stops for the express trains before taking any action, but in the interests of the long distance passengers an adjustment of the intermediate stopping places was necessary to permit of accelerated time schedule being arranged for those trains. “In curtailing the stops the Depertinent endeavoured to make suitable provision for districts that would he affected by the change. In the case of the Mnnawatu line, a fast passenger train stopping at all stations was provided to run Wellington to Palmerston North on life time approximate of the original New Plymouth Mail. This (rain gives a good connection at. Palmerston North with the “Up" mail. For the down journey the Napier-Wellington "'Mail” still stops at Shannon, Levin and Olaki, thus giving good transit from the principal centres to Wellington. The down New Plymouth “Mail" had to lie timed to arrive at Wellington. at a time that would noi clash with the heavy evening suburban Ira Hie and this necessitated a maximum number of stops being eliminated. The Department lias, however, provided another train to leave Palmerston North at 3.48 p.m. for Wellington. This train caters foi alt intermediate stations and makes a passenger run to Wellington.
“It was recognised when the alterations were in train that some little inconvenience would arise at times and it was with a view to reducing this to a minimum, that suitable auxiliary trains were arranged. 1 quite appreciate the position of Foxton, but, regret that 1 am unable to meet you in the matter of adding further stops to the express trains. —Received.
