A loud explosion at the Hawera hospital on a recent afternoon caused a. great, deal of consternation amongst (he patients and staff. When a man named George Dave was admitted to the institution suffering from a severely mutilated hand as the result of an explosion of gelignite, a part of his clothing was cut away and consigned to the furnace by the warder (Mr Lay). A pocket of the clothing contained another plug of gelignite, and the lire or the act of throwing it into tlie furnace caused the explosion. The furnace was badly damaged the. lire was strewn about the floor, and Lay was temporarily stunned. The nurses, with great preseuce of mind swept up the burning embers and prevented the possibility of a lire in the building.
