James Hendry, a young man, was given one month’s imprisonment for stealing an overcoat valued at £5 from outside a clothier’s shop at Palmerston X. on Thursday evening last. Poxton has been particularly quirt during the holidays, a great cumber if local residents taking the opportunity of getting away for a few days. The Foilding races on Saturday and yesterday attracted a number of local people, and some even ventured as far as the TanIn reniknu course. The cold snap I rtvented a good number from pariliming same to this office. At tile local Police Court; yesterday, before Mr M. E. Perreau, J.P., a voting man named Edward Waller Young was charged with being drunk and disorderly in Main Street last Saturday, and with resisting arrest. An unusual incident occurred in the Otago district a few days ago. Just before the departure of a train from Rnleluflia a little child of under three years was playing on the. station, and had climbed on to the platform of one of the carriages. There the child was seen by a nurse, who was a passenger, and who, concluding that the child’s mother was aboard the train, promptly picked up the little one and carried it into the carriage. The I lain by this time was steaming out of the station, and (he nurse discovered that the child's mother was not in the carriage, or, indeed, on thi> train. At Glennmaru. a motorist volunteered to take the child hack to Owaka. On arrival at Owaka a fresh difficulty arose, ill that nobody knew who the child’s mother was, and it was some time before her child was restored to her, none the worse for its untoward experience.
We have been asked by the Levin Chamber of Commerce (says the Chronicle), as the moving body in regard to Levin and District overtures in regard to the railway cut along the Manawatn Line, and associated with the Levin Borough Council in holding the recent public meeting of protest, to point out ihat although the Foxton Chamber of Commerce and Foxton Borough Council have accorded support to llu efforts as to retaining Levin as an express train stopping place, and the Poxton mail services, etc., operate from Levin, it has not been claimed that Levin is “the" terminal for Foxton, but certainly “a" luminal. The correction is made because the following paragraph has been widely circulated: “It was resolved by the Shannon Chamber of Commerce to take exception to a statemcii! made at Levin that l.cviti was the terminal for Poxton. pointing out that Shannon was Fox I on's nearest and most natural outlet."
The amount of tobacco consumed by different smokers varies considerably. Some will use a couple of' ounces a day while others are satisfied with less. The moderate smoker averages perhaps three ounces a week. Indulged ill with discretion, tobacco is admittedly rather beneficial than otherwise. Tt is cliicllv a question of nicotine. The habitual use of tobacco heavily charged with nicotine may result in nerve and heart trouble or weakening of the eyesight. As a mattei of fact, practically all imported tobaccos contain an excess of nicotine. In that connection it may interest the reader to learn that the purest tobaccos produced aio grown in New Zealand. 1 hey contain comparatively such a small percentage of nicotine that they may he indulged in ad. lib. with safety. A peculiarity of their manufacture, by the way, is that tbev arc all toasted. Hence their fine flavour. They are adapted to all tastes. Kiverhead Gold is mild, Navv Cut (Bulldog) medium, and Cut Plug hio. (Bull’s Head) full. You can liny them at any tobacconists. —Advt.
