RACING SENSATION.

St'AXau. IX THE WAIKATO. ALLEGED DOPING AT PAEROA. One of the most interesting racing scandals that have engaged attention for some time is slowly being hatched at Te Awamutu, thecentral figure being an aged gelding that has competed fairly successfully around the circuit during the last two or three months. After he had competed in a certain on the second day of the recent Paerea meeting, in which, incidentally, he finished out of the money, this particular animal’s condition was so had as to attract attention. The police, in fact, took a hand in the matter, with the result that the animal was examined by a well-known Hamilton veterinary surgeon, who found a large swelling on the horse's shoulder, with all the evidence lending to the belief that he had been “doped" to “liven him up” for the race. Apparently the needle had been injected in the wrong place, for the illegal stimulus failed to act, and only had results accrued.

Although nothing definite lias as vet transpired, it is known that the police have taken a statement from the owner and also from a veterin;irv surgeon, who, it is alleged, administered the preparation. The whole matter is at present in a nebulous state, but the police have been successful in obtaining a certain amount of evidence. What course should be adopted is now being considered, but it is extremely probable that a report will shortly he submitted to (lie Racing Conference.
