THE INVERCARGILL SEAT.
SIR JOSEPH WARD CONSENTS TO CONTEST ELECTION. “STRONG RATHER THAN SECTIONAL GOVERNMENT.” Invercargill, Lasl Night. This afternoon, a deputation representative of the different classes in the community waited upon Sii Joseph Ward to request his acceptance of the nomination as Liberal candidate for Invercargill at the next election. Mr. W. N. Stirling, president and Mr. A. Le 11. Hoyles, who acted as spokesmen, said that the Invercargill electors now that a vacancy was about to occur, wished to have as a representative a man whose experience, ability and Parliamentary genius bad been tried and tested by public, service. Sir Joseph Ward was such a man, and if lie consented to accept nomination, they would do all that was possible to make his election a. triumphant victory. Sir Joseph Ward, in replying, said lie was honoured by tlie invitation. Ho referred to his long and intimate connection with Southland and stressed the importance for this country to have a strong, lather than a sectional Government and placed himself unreservedly in their hands. In due season he would appear to address the electors and place his views before them.
He expressed sympathy with Mr. Massey, and hoped that he would soon be restored to health (applause). He thanked them sincerely for the cordial invitation to which he very cheerfully responded.
