POUNDKEEPER ASSAULTED.
MAGISTRATE’S SERIOUS VIEW.
X ease of common assault came before the magistrate, Mr. 1L M. Watson, at Feilding on Thursday last, which Thomas Powell, a farmer of Apiti, was charged with having assaulted George Davoy, poundkeeper for the I’ohaugina Connie Council, also living at Apiti. Sergeant Cahill staled that the poundkeepor, an elderly man. had taken charge of the accused's horse. The accused culled at his house very late one night, when he was in bed, and asked for his horse. Davoy. dressed and went to the pound, there handing over the animal. The bridle happened to be missing, and Unwell lost his temper, striking the old man in the eye, and allegedly kicking him while on the ground. Mr. Power, for the accused, pleaded guilt v to the offence, hut denied that Fowell had ever kicked Pi.vey. The Magistrate took a serious view of the affair, pointing out. that when a young man assaults an elderly man whilst the latter was in execution ■of his duty, he could not. expect to get much consideration from the Court. “This is a serious offence,’’ said his Worship, when imposing a Hue of t'4. He stipulated that of the tine. 20/should he given to the poundkeepor as some eompensation (or his injuries. Fowell was also ordered Mo pay C 4 2s 6d as witnesses’ expenses and medical fees.
