MR. MASSEY’S ILLNESS.

-AN OPERATION YESTERDAY MORNING. The following bulletin was issued from the Prime Minister’s Office at Wellington yesterday morning: The Prime Minister’s illness lately developed more serious symptoms. After consultation between his medical advisers and Dr. Garrick Robertson, of Auckland, it was decided that investigation by operation was essential.

Ever since the close of the session, the Prime Minister has been in it somewhat indifferent state of health, suffering from a. painful illness, stated to be sciatica. For some time he was under treatment at Rotorua, and after his return (o Wellington, particularly since the New Year, it seemed that lie was making steady, if slow progress towards recovery. At the beginning of last week, this pi-ogress was reported to be continuing, but later in the week a turn for the worse took place. News that the Prime Minister was to be operated upon came as a great surprise to his colleagues in the Cabinet, and to everybody concerned. 'On making inquiries at a late hour, reporters were informed that: “The patient’s condition is well maintained, and everything is going on as well as can be expected.” All further inquiries were met by the statement that information would be given in the official bulletins, the second of which is to be issued at noon. Wellington, Noon To-day. The following bulletin concerning Mr Massey’s condition was issued at noon to-day:— Mr Massey passed a fairly comfortable night, and his strength is well maintained.
