THE EPIDEMIC.

A case of infantile paralysis from Jackeytown, that of a boy of twelve months, was admitted to the Palmerston North Hospital yesterday. The disease is present in only a mild form. There were no further discharges yesterday, hut all the patients under treatment arc reported to be progressing favourably. Wanganui, Last Night. Three eases of infantile paralysis were reported to-day.. One was :i girl, thirteen years of age, the second a boy aged six and the third a girl of twenty months. Afaslerton, Last Night.

A fresh case of infantile paralysis was notified last night, that of a child residing in the Borough. Christchurch, Last Night. A significant feature of the infantile paralysis notifications during the past week has been the number of cases among adult, women. Up to the present, the majority of adults who have been noli fled as having contracted the disease have proved negative eases, but the few that have turned out in be positive cases have been mostly of a serious nature. Two furl her adult eases are included in to-day’s not ideations. UNDISCLOSED REMEDY. REJECTED BY AUCKLAND MEDICOS. Auckland, last night, The committee appointed o cooperate with Dr. C. S. Dukes, who claims lie can cure infantile paralysis this morning sent the following letter to the chairman. _ of the Hospital Board: In accordance with the wish of the Auckland Hospital Board, we the undersigned, met Dr. E. S.- Dukes this morning Dr. Dukes stated that he proposed to treat cases of acute infantile paralysis with remedies, the nature and action of which he refused to disclose. At the same time, he wished no other treatment to be applied. In view of the serious possibilities with which this disease is fraught, we cannot accept re sponsibility of sanctioning the comission of those measures on whiehthe medical profession throughout the world is agreed. Mucky, M. 8.„ Ch.B. TOLL OF THE DISEASE. Wellington, March 22. Dr Mclvibbin, Director of Public Hygiene, states that the total numer of infantile paralysis cases in the Dominion was 829 to March XU. Deaths totalled 127, the mortality rate being 15.3. Details are as follows: — Auckland health district 208 cases; 48 deaths, mortality rate 23. tality rate 16.7. Wellington district —437 cases; 58 deaths; mortality rate, 13.3. Canterbury—l6o cases; 17 deaths; mortality rate, 10.6. Otago —24 cases; 4 deaths; mortalityrat e, 16.7.
