The express engine on tile New Zealand railways which was designed in the office of the chief mechanical engineer of the department and made in I lie department workshops, is stated to save 20 per cent, of water and 33 iter cent, of coal over any engine imported.
A little known point arose in a recent court case in the A airarapa when the State Forest Department proceeded against a farmer on (lie (.rounds that lie had committed a breach of the regulations in that he l lighted a tire within 50 yards of a Slate forestry reserve without a permit. A line of £lO was indicted.
