When sentenced to death at Budapest recently, for throning a bomb at a casino which killed eight persons, Josef Mart!' a Communist, burst into hearty laughter. Another Communist, receiving a similar sentence, begged for mercy.
That gigantic animals roamed 20000 or 30,001) years ago over what is now the busiest part of London, lias been proved by the discovery during excavations in Leadcnhall Street, for Lloyd’s new headquarters, of the forearm of a woolly rhinoceros, and the thigh hone of a mastiodon. Natural history museum officials identified the bones, which were found in blue lias —a formation of argillaceous limestone —43 and 20 feet respectively below the street level. A little incident is being told in (he suburbs of Dunedin, of how the urge to do business over-reached itself. The meter reader on several previous visits had urged the housewife to use more gas for, culininary purposes, or the meter would have to be removed, as it was not a paying proposition. On this occasion, the “urge” was repeated. “Excuse me a minute,” said the lidusewife, and after an absence of less than a minute, returned with a spanner and a screw driver. “Will these do for you to remove the meter?” she asked the meter reader. The gas man realised he was up against it. The meter was not removed.
