MAIN HIGHWAYS BOARD AND BOROUGHS.
AMENDMENT TO ACT FRO ED. At last oight's meeting of the Borough Council, the Mayor Chrystall Esq.) reported on an interview lie had had with the chairman of the' Xo. !) Highways Board District (Mr Hannah) in connection with maiiiienaiiee and contribution by tin* Board I*. ronsimelion i ost of hoi ■ nigh roads, lie said that Mi Hannah had inlimaied that his Board was prepared to pa\ onethird of the maintenance cost of main highways within the borough. Bv doing t hi.- they in no way interfered with the contribution from flic Manawatu County Council, which was an automatic payment and would continue just the same. They had no power, however, to grant towards construction work. Boroughs were rather unfairly treated in this direction. The May or suggested that an amendment to the Act was necessary and was of opinion that the Council should frame a resolution and get the cooperation of boroughs similarly placed as themselves. There were approximately four miles of main highway in the borough of Foxton, and they would receive'roughly £l*2o in maintenance. The following motion was then put and carried unanimously:—“That the support of the local bodies (boroughs) -die enlisted to an amendment of the Main Highways Ad, enabling the Highways Boards to contribute towards the construction of roads being continuation of main high ways on a similar basis as is provided for in the case of highways passing through counties."
