BOOKMAKING CHARGES.
TWO MORE NELSON CASES. Nelson, Last Night. William 1 rerherl Afoxey appeared mi remand at the Ala gist rate’s Court to-day before Afessrs A. Gould and IV. Stewart, J.’sP., charged with on 191 h .January, carrying on the occupation of a bookmaker.
Evidence was given by a police probationer a- to having bets with accused and using marked money. The police evidence concerning I lie raiding of the premises was to ihe- effect that certain of the marked motiev was recovered and that accused endeavoured to put what the police believed to be betting accounts in his mouth, hut that the police pulled his hand away and recovered them. 'fhe bench decided that a prima facie case had been made out. Accused pleaded not guilty, reserved his defence and was committed to the Supremo Court for trial, being released on hail. Maurice Vivian Richard Maxwell was charged on December 31, 1924, with carrying on the occupation of book-making within fhe meaning of (lie Gaming Act. A police probationer, in evidence, stated that he received a cheque through the post signed “Vivian Maxwell.” li was in payment, for dividends on horses lie had hacked in connection with Aloxoy. Witness said he had asked accused if he would make bets on two horses in (he Wairnrapn race meeting, and accused said “Give them to Atoxey. He is my agent.” Accused pleaded mil guilty, reserved his defence and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Bail was allowed. !)n two charges of laying totalisator odds on the Wellington races, David Jones was lined £3O in the Auckland Police Court yesterday. Chief-Defective Cummings described him as being in a medium way of business and always paid 20/- in the pound.
