SHANNON BRIDGE.

MAYOR OBJECTS TO CONSTRUCTION OF NEW BRIDGE BUNT “ANTIDELUVIAN” AND RIDICULOUS. At, last night’s Borough Council meeting the Mayor reported on the conference of local bodies held last week to discuss matters re the (Shannon bridge. He said he was disappointed at the action of the Manawatu County Council. A resolution had been carried at that conference recomjmending the erection of a new bridge to cost between £ 18,000 and £22,000, and that the old bridge site be done away with, i-ial further, that the punt be used until the new bridge was erected. This would be anything up to three years, and such a means of crossing the river as a punt was antideluvian and ridiculous. The Manawatu Highways Board would have subdised the cost of repairing the old bridge (£15,000) by paying one tliird of the cost, but in spite of this fact the proposition had been discarded. Fox ton would have to pay its allocated share in connection with the erection of the new bridge and interest and sinking fund on the old bridge. The matter was of vital importance to all concerned. The motion carried at the conference was in direct defiance of settlers on both sides of the river, who wanted the old bridge repaired. It was denied, nothing could be done in the matter and the matter was dropped.
