CHARGED WITH BOOKMAKING.

ArORE GASES AT NELSON. Nelson Last NightIn connection with cases under the Gaming Act, of alleged bookmaking, William AJoxey appeared on remand to-day, charged (1) that on .January 19th he did use certain premises in Trafalgar St. known as a fruit and confectionery shop o„s a common gaming house; (2) that he carried on the occupation of bookmaker within the meaning of the Gaming Act.

Accused pleaded not guilty to the first charge and on the second also pleaded not guilty, and elected to be dealt with by a jury. Counsel asked that the summary charge be adjourned pending the hearing of the major charge before the jury. His client would be seriously prejudiced if ihe hearing of the minor case was. taken now. There was also a charge against, accused’s father that he wilfully allowed his premises to he used as a common gaming house. There was a further charge against Maxwell which would go before a jury. All the cases were inextricably mixed up, and he -asked that all (he charges be adjourned so as to allow a clear case to be heard before jury. This the Magistrate agreed to do, and accused was remanded on the same bail -as before.

The charges against William T. Alexey charged with wilfully allowing his premises to be used as a common gaining house; against Alor. ris and Vivian Alaywell for alleged bookmaking and against Dominic Merlino of being found on a com-, mon gaming house were adjourned. Depositions in the charges to go before a jury will be taken on Wednesday morning and the minor charges were adjourned until Alarch 2nd. CARRIERS’ OFFICE RAIDED.. Auckland, Last Night. A visit by detectives to the Carriers’ office in Theatre Line to-day led to the arrest of Edward Williams, aged 43, on a charge of keeping a common gaming house. Six other men were arrested on charges of being foumfin a common gaining house without lawful excuse. Accused appeared in the Police Court and were remanded, bail being fixed at £IOO for Williams and £5 each for the others.
