Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 1925 BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY AND COUNCIL.
THE constitution of the local Beautifying Society provides that its objects are to beautify public reserves and waste places and to protect native bush. 'ln order -to carry out such work, it depends upon the practical sympathy of the public. In this connection the public raised a substantial sum a few years ago, which has enabled the society to accomplish something to make the town more attractive. We need only refer to I lie transformation of the once neglected and delapidnled piece of unloveliness now known—ami admired —as lhaknrn Darden. Any work done on public reserves is, of course, subject, to the approval of flic Borough Council, as the controlling authority. The latter, however, musi lie careful in its dealings with :1m society and be prepared to share the cost, if the good work if this vomill ary body is to continue. Reasonable requests have been made to the Council in certain matters, which, we regret to state, have not been met with that generous response which the society is entitled to oxpe-i and we would urgi* that, a more liberal and sympathetic, spirit be evinced in the future. TC the objects of the society are to lie accomplished the Borough Council must co-operate in a more generous manner than in the past and he prepared to bear a fair proportion of initial cost and maintena nee.
