ISLAND SINKS UNDER SEA.
BELIEVED TO BE NO SUR- . YIVORS. London, January 27th. The “Central News” Lisbon aorlespondent states that the Government has received confirmation of the blotting out of the island town of Port Alexander, in the south of Portuguese West Africa. Earlier wireless reports on the subject were lcgarded sceptically. Rescue ships new report that they picked np from r lie raging- sea a number of sailors who resembled gibbering madmen, as they told the story of (he catastrophe. According to them the bosom of the sea suddenly heaved mo-untain-high, then dropped in a swirling maelstrom under which the island disappeared, leaving only floating debris. Scores of dead bodies indicafed the scene of disaster, which is attributed to a seismic disturbance. At present it is believed that not a single inhabitant survived but. it ; - hoped some may be washed up on the ilia inland, where dozens of small craft arc stranded. Port Alexander is a. small seaport in the extreme south of Portuguese West Africa, about 100 miles north of the frontier of ex-German South West Africa.
