FIRE AT TAIKOREA.
CORONATION HALL GUTTED. Shortly after seven o’clock last night a near-by resident noticed smoke issuing from the eaves of the Tnikorea Coronation Halh He immediately rang the Glen Oroua exchange and an alarm of fire was given residents in the vicinity of the building. A bucket brigade was promptly- on the scene, water being carted to the scene in drays, and the outbreak quickly subdued. The front and roof of the building are badly burned, but otherwise the building escaped serious damage. The save was remarkable as a stiff easterly wind was blowing at the time. The cause of the outbreak is a mystery. The fire started in the roof of the building. Wiremen were working in the hall installing the electric light during the day. It is understood that the buidling is insured, but neither the amount nor the office are available. A settler, in conversation with our representative, expressed the opinion that had the outbreak occured later in the evening, after the exchange was closed, the building would have been totally destroyed.
