THE HEMP MARKET.

DECEMBER GRADING RETURNS The grading returns for hemp, tow, stripper-tow and stripper slips for the month of December, have been issued by the Department of Agriculture as under: — The following shows the detailed particulars of the hemp graded: —

Seventy-eight bales at Picton were graded fine. Twelve bales at Auckland, two at Foxton, 126 at Wellington and three at Blenheim were rejected and three bales at Auckland were condemned. The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis: — Fine 78 (34), good fair 810 (1,502), high fair 4,780 (3,481), fair 3,178 (1,118), common 655 (58), rejected 143 (62), condemned 3 (nil), a total of 9,656, being an increase of 3,401 on last year's figures. The number of bales graded at each port was as follows: —Auckland 2,404, Foxton 1,768, Wairoa 262, Wellington 2,961, Picton 100, Blenheim 343, Bluff 1,272, Dyuiedin 321, Pt. Chalmers 195, Lyttelton 30. The following shows the detailed particulars of the tow graded:—

Twenty-one bales at Auckland, six at Foxton, 48 at Wellington, 16 at Bluff and 11 at Pt. Chalmers were condemned. The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis:— First grade 375 (474), 2nd gx-ade 1,909 (918), 3rd grade 540 (131), condemned 102 (32), a total of 2,926 bales, an increase of 1,371 on last year’s figures. The number of bales graded at each port was as follows: —Auckland 523, Foxton 336, Wairoa 64, Wellington 763, Picton 55, Blenheim 119, Bluff 693, Pt. Chalmers 131, Dunedin 53, Lyttelton 30. Stripper-tow:—Eighteen bales at Auckland were graded Ist grade. 40 bales at Foxton and 27 at Wellington 2nd grade; 6 bales at Wellington were condemned. Stripper-slips.—Seven bales at Auckland were graded Ist grade, and 27 bales at Auckland, 10 at Foxton, 166 at Bluff, five at Port Chalmers and 54 at Wellington were graded 2nd gi’ade, a total of 269 bales.
