OUR PIONEERS.
SOME OF NEW ZEALAND’S FIRST BORN. “Anent the correspondence and claims as to the oldest citizen at present in New Zealand, who is New Zealand born, of British parentage, (lie following facts regarding one of our Greytown residents may be of interest,” writes the Rev. G. Knowles Smith, in the Dominion. ‘‘Mr Hart Udy, with his wife Jane and four children, Ann, Hart, John, and William, were passengers on the emigrant ship Duke of Roxburgh, which arrived at Petone early in February, 1840. In the May foljowing, that is, May 28, 1840, at Petone, a fifth child was born, who is Thomas Udy, a hale and active old gentleman whose residence is in Humphries St., Greytown, his brother William also being resident here. The latter was two years old on the family’s arrival. So far as I can gather this is the oldest of (hose brought to your notice, as Thomas will, if spared, celebrate Lis 85th birthday in May of this year.”
