MOTORING TRAGEDY NEAR BLENHEIM.
CAR DROPS sfi FEET; TWO PEOPLE KILLED. Blenheim, Yesterday. A terrible accident occurred this morning at Redwood Pass, about eight miles from Blenheim, resulting in the death of two people of Christchurch. A party of seven, comprising Herbert Cyril Dixon, grocer, of St. Albans, Christchurch, his wife Annie, their two children, Rta, aged 7, and Arthur (aged 3), also Sydney Mawson, salesman, at Messrs Johnston and Garnett, Wairnfapa Road, Fendalton, his wife Emily (aged 41) and son, Herbert. The party arrived at Blenheim last evening, presumably from Nelson, in an Essex ear, and left Blenheim this morning for Christchurch. Dixon was driving, and on attempting lo negotiate a sharp hairpin bend on Redwood Pass, the car apparently swerved, going over the •bank to drop 56 feel into a small creek below. ) It was an almost straight drop. None saw the accident, hut shortly after it occurred, Reginald Thomson driving a ear to Blenheim, was slopped by young Mawson, and made acquainted with what had occurred. Thomson saw that nothing could he done without assistance, and went to the nearest telephone, where he rang for the police and an ambulance.
When (he police arrived it was seen that a terrible tragedy had occurred. The ear was badly smashed. Mrs Mawson was just breathing when picked up and died in a few minutes. The boy Arthur Dixon appeared to have his back broken and was quite dead. The other five occupants were all more or less injured and unable to give anv particulars. All were admitted to the Wairau Hospital. The extent of their injuries are not yet known.
