LEVEL CROSSING ACCIDENT
AT LEVIN. BY-STANDERS’ INJURED. Levin, December 22. The south-bound New Plymouth express, when running late on Saturday afternoon; collided at the level crossing at the entrance to the Levin railway yard with a motor delivery van owned by Mr C. H. Martin, grocer, and driven by Mr R. Anderson. The van was carried about 20 feet and thrown off the line on the opposite side, where two boys were standing on the footpath waiting for the train to pass. One named Wilfred Martin, was struck on the head by the van, sustaining a. fractured skull and other severe wounds and he was taken to the Palmerston N. hospital to-day. The other, a Levin Chronicle runner, Gordon Milrcy, was rendered unconscious butt is now recovering. The driver escaped unhurt. The van was badly knocked about. --- BURNHAM DOUBLE FATALITY. Christchurch, Last Night. “The evidence leads me to believe that these men were not keeping a proper look out when nearing the crossing. They had a clear view and should have seen the train coming. No blame is attachable to anyone.” So spoke the Coroner, Mr Wyvern Wilson to-day, at an inquest on Duncan Stewart and Cyril Edward Reeves, who were fatally injured when a motor-cycle driven by Stewart-. collided with Uie north-bound express at Burnham crossing on December 13.
