THE SHANNON BRIDGE
DEPUTATION WAITS ON P.W. ENGINEER.
As the outcome of the meeting of settlers and others interested, held at Moutoa last Friday night to protest against the make-shift arrangements in maintaining communication with Shannon, a deputation consisting of Messrs J. Linklater, M.P., W. E. Barber, Jewell, W. Carter, Pigott and Hyde, waited upon Mr Furkett, chief engineer of the Public Works Department at Wellington on Saturday. The deputation protested against the use of a punt for transit purposes and advocated the re-erection of the span of the bridge washed away together with protective works for the present structure. The engineer promised to look into the matter immediately and in the meantime to make temporary arrangements to maintain transit aeross the river.
