LEVIN-FOXTON-MARTON RAILWAY LINK.
PRACTICAL APPRECIATION. The hon. secretary-treasurer of the Levin-Foxton-Marton Railway League has not been inundated as yet with contributions, but it is pleasing to find that a number of public-spirited bodies and citizens cognisant of the immediate and prospective value of the effort recently put forward, and appreciative of the work and economies of the Executive, have subscribed toward the exexpenses incidental to (1) securing a survey, (2) a visit from the Royal Commission, and (3) preparation of expert and lay evidence. The donation membership fund has been contributed to- as follows: —Manawatu County Council £5, Horowhenua County Council £5, Levin Borough Council £5, Foxton Borough Council £5, Messrs W. H. Field, M.P. £5 5/-, J. Linklater, M.P., £5 5/-, F. G. Roe £2 2/-, John Kebbell £2 2/-, Thos. Hobson £1 1/-, D. G. Hamilton £l, R, H. £l, Levin Chamber of Commerce £2 10/-. Including donations from members of the Executive the total aniount is £4O 5/-. In 1921 the whole of the cost fell uppn the local bodies and Chambers of Commerce, involving contributions ranging from £33 to £lO each body, counties naturally being levied for the higher amounts, their respective capital values being from 9 to 15 times greater than the boijough concerned, and the boroughs higher than the chambers which are : minus a purse of any consequence. As against £175 in 1921 the first stage of the recently inaugurated campaign will cost a comparatively small sum. i; ' v y..j£ U.ll 3
