HOSPITAL AND RAILWAY SITE.
BOARD ENTERS A PROTEST,
The proposed new railway station and shunting yards on the Palmerston N. deviation are located at the rear of (lie Hospital. The Health Department is of the opinion that shunting operations in close proximity to the institution would be detrimental to patients and no.tified the Railway Deparment accordingly. These facts were submitted to a meeting of the Palmerston North Hospital Board on Thursday. In bringing the matter before the meeting, the chairman (Sir James Wilson) said that Dr. Forrest, medical superintendent, had said that the matter was a serious one, and that an objection should be made. Mr J. A. Nash, M.P.: “On behalf of the Levin-Marton deviation people?” (Laughter). The chairman stated that it might he possible for the shunting to be carried out in the vicinity, in not such close proximity to the hospital. Dr. Forrest had asked that a fnrtlter protest be made with a new to having effected the alteration mentioned, Mr Nash: “This is a piece of absurdity. There are trains running near my home and they never disturb me.” . The chairman: “But you are not a patient.” Mr'Nash: “I am patient in this matter.” (Laughter). Mr J. K. Hornblow (Foxton): “This is not a laughing matter. The Board should object to a nuisance being created in the vicinity of a hospital. Shunting operations would he a great menace to the welfare of patients.’’ He supported the contention that further objection should be made. It was decided to protest further.
