THE SHANNON BRIDGE.

PUNT TO BE USED. Since the flood carried away the western span on the Shannon side of the bridge, which crosses the Manawatu river at Moutoa, connection with Shannon has been cut off by road' and much inconvenience suffered by the settlers and public interested. The authorities are taking the necessary steps to replace the span, but owing to the erosion which has taken place, the work will take longer than was at first anticipated. The engineers have reported that in order to safeguard the bridge against floods in the future, a new site will be necessary. The Highways Board now have control of this particular highway and are acting in conjunction with the Horowhenua County Council in restoring communication. The County workmen are providing access to the river to connect with a punt, the dimensions of which are 24ft. by 16ft., which will ferty traffic across and which is hoped to he in order in about a fortnight. The punt will be operated by a hand winch and cable from either side. The punt will be large enough to accommodate two motor cars at a time and lorries up to three tons loaded.
