Manawatu Herald TUESDAY, DECEMBER 9, 1924. RAILWAY COMMISSION.
WE have been informed that this journal has been “nobbled’ - by Palmerston N. in connection with the Levin-Marton deviation. To those interested in the linking up of the Main Trunk line, as-a work of national importance, our advocacy has never wavered and we were prominent in the agitation years before those who make such foolish remarks were on the sky line in the movement. Our objection has been to any 'dog-in-the-manger attitude in connection with Palmerston’s railway facilities. We still maintain that Palmerston’s geographical position demands improved railwayfacilities, apart altogether from the relief that the connecting link will afford. It is for experts to say how best the Palmerston N. situation can be met from a provincial point of view. The linking up of the Main Trunk on the other hand, is national in its bearing and should not have been overlooked, but should have taken precedence over the Palmerston deviation when the Minister’s railway programme was submitted and sanctioned by Parliament. The Commissioners’ report on these two points will be awaited with interest and their iinding will probably lead to a definite and satisfactory solution. The League has put up a good case and are to be heartily congratulated upon their enterprise and convincing evidence.
