NEWS AND NOTES.

A human skeleton has been found in the Wangaehu River, just below Mangamahu. The remains are believed to be those of William Tyler Vowles, aged 34, a new arrival from Australia, who was seen deliberately to enter the stream when in high flood in July of last year. He was on his way from Wanganui to Mangamahu, where lie was to take up road work. Possibly the rarest wild plant in the world is a curious small tree (piUo-sporum obeordatum) which was discovered by the famous naturalist, Raoul, in 1840, when lie visited Akaroa as a botanist to the French expedition in that year. The peculiar thing about this plant is that consequent efforts to find any on Banks Peninsular failed, and it was thought to be extinct. In recent years it was discovered, however, at Kaitaia, Norh Auckland. Most of the trees in the district had been destroyed, and there is very few h i'i. As far as known it is the only place in he world where it grows. A well-known Wangnm'ii resident of generous proportions was attracted with an advertisement by an outside firm which offered suits and an extra pair of trousers at a moderate figure. The Wanganui resident sent his measurements along, and the tailoring (inn was so startini by the figures supplied that they wrote for confirmation, also slating that to fill the order would probably result in a loss on their part. However when the figures were verified the waistline was in the vicinity of a century of inches —they sent the suit and the ecetera, but notified that they were not open for a repeat order. A young man named Andrew Middleton appeared in the Waihi Court this week charged with having been found in possession of a loaded revolver. The police evidence was to the effect that the accused was of a somewhat combative nature and more or less wild and irresponsible person inclined toward drinking. The revolver was found on him after a squabble at a social. A conviction was recorded, and the magistrate adopted the suggestion of the police that Middleton he admitted to probation for two years, a prohibition order to be issued against him during the currency of the probationary period.

Lezare Tessier lias been arrested at Paris on a charge of murdering Louis Poulay, whose body was found six months ago in the Bois de Boulogne, with the head battered. The crime was traced in a remarkable manner. Tessier ran a clandestine betting business, and Poulay was one of his clients. A detective} on making a miseroseopie examination of Poulay’s clothes, noticed particles of coal dust on them, and concluded that the body bad lain in a coal cellar. Inquiries showed that Tessier always interviewed his clients in a cellar and a search revealed bloodstains in the cellar, where Poulay had come to collect big winnings.

Toasted tobacco is the last word in the manufacture of the fragrant ueed. Its process is based upon science, and just exactly as people [■refer their food cooked, they will now prefer their tobacco toasted. Toast is certainly wkolesomer than soggy bread, and the same principle applies to tobacco. Take for inslance the locally-manufactured brands. They are all toasted and consequently more pleasing to the palate, besides there is less nicotiue in them, and that is a matter of importance, inasmuch as any excess of nicotine absorbed by the system may seriously affect the nerves o" cause Smoker’s Heart and weakening sight. Smokers should therefore, not fail to give this new tobacco a trial; there is a vast difference between toasted and nonlousted and they will find it is all in favour of the toasted. Obtainable in three strengths, Itiverheud Gold, very mild and aromatic; Toasted Navy Cut (Bulldog), medium and Cut Plug No. 10 is recommended to those who prefer a full body. 8
