EREEZE AT RAILWAY LEAGUE MEETING.

MR LINKLATER HITS BACK. When the railway improvement schemes were before the House the member for Manawatu (Mr J. Linkla I er) was not in the Chamber, and he was sharply rebuked by the Mayer of Foxton (Mr .T. Chrystall) for not watching (be interests of the Levin-Mart on railway, says the P.N. Times.

At Wednesday's meeting of the League in Foxton, Mr Linklater vigorously defended himself. He said he knew .perfectly well that the chairman (Mr Ghrvstall) was disappointed in him on account of his not being in the House when the Railway statement was tabled, but he did not think the Mayor had acted quite fairly to him. He should have informed the speaker that he was going to bring this matter before the Borough Council. He and iln chairman met on the Saturday ;«t the Harbour Board meeting'and on Monday the chairman brought forward his strictures. That was quite a wrong position for any Mayor to take up,.and the speaker liked a man who would play fair. However, he was always willing to lei Ipgones be bygones. They must realist' that he is interested in belli deviations- —in that of Palmerston as well as the Levin-Marten one. He was very pleased to know that the matter was going before the Commission. As the representative of Manawatu he realised that it was his duly to forward every movement thill would benefit -Manawatu. and if this deviation would do so it was his duty to get behind it. So far as Palmerston was concerned, something must be done there. If the Leviu-Marton project was a national matter lie was going to help it, but (hey did not want to build a non-paying railway. They had quite enough of them already. They should bring all the evidence possible before the commission, and he would help them in that. Mr Chrystall considered il was not his place to approach Air Linklater for an explanation. The latter should have offered one, as he should have known exception would be taken.

Air Linklater: 1 did not have the slightest idea of it. The chairman said the League ivas determined that nothing should stand in the way of justice being done to the proposal. They would be very pleased to have Air Linklater associated with them from now on in the fight.
