THE HEMP MARKET.
OCTOBER GRADING RETURNS. The grading returns for hemp, tow, stripper-tow and stripper slips for the month of October have been issued by the Department of Agriculture as follows: Hemp: The total number of bales graded was 7,870, as eompayed with 5,028 for October, 1923, an increase of 2,842 bales. For the 12 months ended 31st October, 1924, 71,987 bales were graded as against 62,509 for the previous 12 months, an increase of 9,478 bales. Tow : During the month 1,792 bales were graded as against 1,344 in October, 1923, an increase of 448 bales. For the 12 months ended 31st October, 1923, 16,981 bales were graded its against 15,150, an increase of 1,831 bales. Striper-tow. —During the month 116 bales were graded as against 140 in October, 1923, a decrease of 24 bales. S( ripper-slips.—During the month 304 bales were graded, as againsl 14 in October, 1923, an increase of 290 bales. The following shows the detailed particulars of the hemp graded:—
Forty-eight bales, at Pic ton were graded fine. Three bales at Auckland, 86 at Foxton, 51 at Wellington and 15 at Lyttelton were rejected. Four bales at Auckland were condemned. The following shows the number of bales graded at each port, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis: —Fine 48 (nil), good fair 608 (835), high fair 3,573 (2,650), low fan- 3,114 (1,412), common 368 (52), rejected 155 (79) condemned 4 (nil). The number of bales graded at each port were: —Auckland. 1,579, Foxton 2,215, Wairoa 358, Wellington 2,238, Picton 58, Blenheim 75, Lyttelton*2s9, Pt. Chalmers 145, Dunedin 98, Bluff 845. The following is the detailed particulars of the tow graded:—
Twelve bales at Auckland, 26 at Foxton and 21 at Wairoa were condemned. The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis:— Ist grade 328 (484), 2nd grade 1,106 (780), 3rd grade 299 (69), condemned 59 (11). The number of bales graded at each port were.: —Auckland 317, Foxton 430, Wairoa 78, Wellington 472, Picton 41, Blenheim 12, Port Chalmers 49, Dunedin 27, Bluff 366. Stripper Tow.—Ninety-eight bales at Foxton and 11 bales at Wellington were graded 2nd grade and seven bales at Wellington were condemned.
Stripper-slips. —Twelve bales at Auckland and 108 at Wellington were graded Ist grade. Nineteen bales at Auckland, 30 at Foxton, 26 at Wairoa, five at Pt. Chalmers and 104 at Bluff were graded 2nd grade.
