SILUTES IN THE BOX. Auckland, Last Night. . The trial of Benjamin Harrison Shuies, the American seaman, for the murder of Reginald Louis Short at Auckland, was commenced at ilie Supreme Court before Mr Justice llcrduian to-day. A Her outlining the case, Mr Meredith,'Crown Prosecutor, said that two defences could be raised. The accused could plead that lie committed the act when he was bvermastered by passions and worked up to such a pitch that lie was not responsible for bis actions or thatlit* had done it in self-defence. Counsel analysed these pleas, to show that neither would, us he submitted, commend-- themselves to the jury.

Evidence was heard on lines of the proceedings at the Police Court on October 13 and 23. The case was then adjourned.
