IN DEFENCE OF OUR HOSPITALS.

CRITICISM RESENTED. A phase of the Palmerston North Hospital Inquiry was heard in the House on Saturday morning. The Leader of Opposition (Air T. M. Wilford) asked the Health Alinisler in the House if he had seen the statement of Dr. Begg, who gave evidence at the Palmerston N. Hospital Inquiry to the effect that New Zealand hospitals are inefficient. Mr Wilford said the statement seemed most, serious for a president of the B.M.A. to make. (lon. Sir Maui Pomare said it was rather astonishing to hifn to find a responsible .individual like Dr. Begg making such a sweeping assertion. The hospitals in this country were not inefficient. As compared wit It the hospitals of other countries they shod on a very high level. This facl was testified to by the doctors from , vir seas who visited here recently, including Dr. Alayo. Those doctors inspected our hospitals and were of the opinion thev were very efficient. I fe would go into the matter as suggested l>v Air Wilford and would make a public statement later on because he did not think a statement of that kind should go unchallenged. His own experience was that the hospitals of New Zealand were efficient and that the men in charge of them were efficient, painstaking and capable men worthy of any hospital in the world.
