LEVIN-MARTON RAILWAY.
Air J. Kebbell, of Levin, writes as follows "to the Chronicle: —
Sir, —When reading the account in your paper of the deputation to the Prime Minister and Mr Coates from Pox ton and Levin, re the Marton-Levin Railway, I was struck that no one ■ remembered or spoke about the efforts made in Mr Stddon’s time to have the connection made between Marton and Levin. Before the Manawatu County broke up it employed two Engineers. After that it only required one. ~So Mr Stewart was dispensed with, lie then made a survey of the line between Poxton and Levin, crossing the Manawatu a little higher up the river than the present bridge and running across the main drain straight to the firm land. Mr Stewart died shortly after in Wellington and the notes of bis survey have been lost. The money to execute the work was in hand from Glasgow, showing that subscribers must have had great confidence in him. Then an enquiry was hold by a Government officer, Mr McKeller, who reported against the railway but added that it would be carried out hereafter, probably when the Main Trunk was completed. Surely that time has now come. The late Mr John Davies, Mr Gower (now at Auckland) and myself were to be on the local directory. It might also have been pointed out that the incline from the Itangitikei Bridge is so steep that, the long up-hill pull from Feilding governs all the loads of trains running via_Palmerston N., whereas between Marton, Poxton and Levin it is practically level. What is the Levin Chamber of Commerce doing? Have they communicated with all the other Chambers from Wellington to Auckland, except the Palmerston N. Chamber and asked their support?
