BIG GUNS IN ACTION.
ARTILLERY CAMPS AT FOXTON. It is probable that the Foxton public will not only hear the boom- } in» of bifr spins' but will he permitted to see the 17th Battery with its - 60-pounders in action in February, v This battery lias only once previously fired six rounds. The minimum range for its guns is 10 miles. From Sorenson’s Corner, at Himatangi, the battery could reduce Palmerston North to mins, (distant about eighteen miles) in a very short space of time. The 60•j.ound projectiles will not, however, /■- be hurtled towards Palmerston N., but will travel in a. northerly direction along tlie coast from behind the Racecourse, where the guns will be placed. Captain Pollard was in Foxton yesterday and from him we learned that two camps will be held this month. On November 21s| the 7th Battery will go into camp and will be followed on the 28th by the Bth Battery. Each eamp will number-100 men.
On the second week in February the Gib Battery (Napier) will go into eamp and later in the same month the 17th Bniierv with its 60-
poitnders will follow. Each company will be in charge of its unit commander. The 7th Battery will he in charge of Lieut. Garner, and the Bth Jay Capt. Wood. Captain Pollard says the Defence Department, keenly appreciates the generous spirit of the Foxton Racing Club for placing the grounds and appointments at their disposal The public will he cordially invited to visit the camps.
