Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 18, 1924. LEVIN MAARON RAILWAY.
THAT the Alain Trunk line will be linked between Afarton and Levin, some day, is (lie opinion of all who lave given Ibis mailer any I bought over Hie past thirty years. To-day Ibe travelling publie a ini ilie Rail wav Department are paying (lie priee for past engineering blunders. Tin* roule was surveyed years ago and ihe Department is in possession of the engineering details. Tinonly argument against its construction is thal the present circuitous route must continue unit more pressing works are completed. Let us frankly admit Palmerston's needs for immediate improved mil way facilities and the fact thal its geographical position will make it a big clearing centre in the future. This problem is a matter for experts and while it may mean a large capital outlay, its consummation cannot set aside the national importance of the Marton-Levin link. The deputation which waited upon the Prime Minister and Minister for Railways on Thursday will impress upon the Government the fact that this national work must not be overlooked. The Minister for Railways has acorded the League an opportunity to present its case before an independent tribunal of experts and it now remains for those interested to prepare convincing evidence in support of this national work being included in the present railway construction programme.
