CHEAPER TOBACCO.
Resolutions passed by the House on Thursday night have the effect of reducing- the duty on cut and plug- tobacco by 8d per lb. The reduction takes effect from January 17, so ns to allow retailers and others to clear stocks. The new duties for New Zealand tobacco are to be 1/8 per lb .on cut tobacco and 1/6 on other. The.cost of the reduction to the country is, over £75,000. In reply to Mr. Perrelle, Mr Massey stated in Parliament on Thursday that he had reason to know that as: a result of the reduction in taxation which had recently been made, Hie banks and other financial firms wire making reductions in the interest rates on overdrafts and other transactions.
