FOXTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
SPECIAL AIEETING.
A special meeting of the Council of Ihe above Chamber was held in 1 lie Rest Room at the Town Hall last evening. Present: Messrs D. Christie (president), Perreau, 'Winsi an ley, Cehystall, .Tno. Ross, Osborne. MeMullian, C. Simmons, and R. Me-Murray (secretary).
The president said that the meeting had been called for the purpose of considering what further steps should be taken in furthering the question of the Levin-Marton deviation and he thanked Mr Winstanley for arranging the meeting. II had been suggested ihai a half-page be taken in a special edition of the “Dominion'’ which will be published during the Royal Show week.
Messrs .1. Chrystall and Winstanley gave an interesting report of the reception accorded the deputation by the Premier and Ministry*’ of Railways. Mr Winstanley set forth at length ihe idea of a publicity campaign and (he method of obtaining funds for same. After discussion, ii was decided to ‘recommend to the executive .of the Railway League that a half-page be taken in the Dominion, this Chamber guaranteeing its quota of the cost.
Mr Chrystall, us chairman of the -'executive, undertook to get into communication with the other members of the league. Messrs Winstanley, Perreau and Christie were appointed a committee to collect the necessary funds , for the advertising, promises for which were already in hand. Air C. Simmons was elected a member of the Chamber.
When returning thanks for his election, Mr Simmons mentioned the unfortunate antagonism which luid arisen between Shannon and Foxton over Foxton declining to subscribe towards the celebration arranged by the Shannon Borough Council for the opening of the Mongolian Electric Power works.
It was pointed out that as far as the Chamber was concerned, no funds were available for such a purpose, as tile only resources the Chamber had were the members' subscriptions, and these were barely sufficient for ordinary expenses. Mr Chrystall, in defence of the Borough Council, said that the Council had to decline to subscribe to ilie fund as they had no power, nn,r the Act in vote money for such
ii purpose, hut admitted that the. reply to the Shannon Borough Council may have been rather “bald.” Mr Simmons, in reply, said he imped that even at this late hour, something might he done to remove the feeling that at present existed. The President brought- up the umtter of the secretary being ati ncked by a correspond cut in the local Press. Such statements as v.-erv made, were quite contrary lo fact. After several members had -qw-ken in defence of the secretary, the president moved that this Chamber place on record its appreciation of the secretary’s (Mr R. McMurray) work and advocacy of the Levin -MaHon deviation. —.Seconded by AL Perreau and carried unanimously.
